los-gemelos-perspectiveLos Gemelos (the twins) on Santa Cruz Island are two large craters that were once underground magma chambers.

When the magma chambers caved in they left two huge impressive looking craters.

While the craters themselves are worth the trip, you can also see many different types of bird and plant-life on this excursion.

Where are Los Gemelos?

The highway from Itabaca Channel to Puerto Ayora runs between the two craters. They are in the highlands of Santa Cruz close to the main road that runs across the island.

The Climate at Los Gemelos

The climate in the highlands is different than on the coast because of the altitude. The highlands receive more moisture and are covered in a Scalesia forest. There are large trees covered in epiphytes. The epiphytes hang down and blow in the wind.

In the rainy season, it can be sunny at Aventura Lodge and rainy in the highlands.

This makes for a jungle feeling, a very beautiful setting for Los Gemelos.

Los Gemelos is one of the many places on the Galapagos islands where you feel like you are in a different world.

Have you been here? Is it on your bucket list?
