  27. Forest Redding, Jr., Ph.D. says:

Dear Hernan Rodas, Bryan and Dena Haines, and Lisa Cho,

Are there any other current contests or programs in 2014 that you would note/recommend for a person to view, study and write about the wonders of marine life and other coastal resources in/of the Galapagos… and other fragile ecosystems around the globe? I am devoting the rest of my life to exploring, writing and lecturing/reporting/commenting on the living and natural wonders of the sea…oceans of the earth. From my doctoral dissertation in 1979 on “…Sharing the Living Resources of the Sea:…,” (Univ. of Oklahoma, copyrighted in 1980, University Microfilms International, U. of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48106) … to the present day, I have maintained an active research interest tied to ocean-policy studies as well as voluntary service (U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in the Montego Bay National Marine Park in Jamaica during 2010) and other voluntary coastal projects. Moreover, I belong to a number of private environmental and oceanic organizations designed to inform, educate, and teach students and all people, especially those living in coastal areas, how essential it is to protect marine life and replenish coastal natural living resources–controlling pollution, leaving fewer carbon footprints, caring for reefs and increasingly endangered marine life species. There is so much to do, but each of us can choose a specific topic, subject, project, ecopolitical/environmental program to work on. Collectively with others, we can help to save the seas’ wonders and vast but not unlimited natural resources & treasures for future generations.

That is why, if I can, I would also like to visit and be inspired by the efforts and programs you have developed to maintain, study and uphold the Galapagos Islands as a natural maritime example of how fragile marine ecosystems can survive the assaults of modernity, overdevelopment and pollution impacting on all coastal area, shores and islands today.

    • Lisa Cho says:

      Dear Mr. Redding,

Thank you for writing us and for your interest in Galapagos conservation. We don’t currently have any contests, but if you are on our mailing list you will definitely know when the next is. For volunteer opportunities in conservation, I would strongly recommend checking out the Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Foundation. They sometimes offer assistance to well-qualified volunteers. Best luck, and hope you can find a way to study the islands.
