A Hidden Gem – Galapagos Ceramic Mosaic Art Garden

Sometimes you might be 10 feet away from something awesome and not even realize it. This happened to me recently in the Galapagos.

I had walked to and from my hotel (Red Mangrove Aventura Lodge in Puerto Ayora) a dozen times. I thought I had seen quite a lot of the local culture during my tour, between the cute tourist shops, restaurants, folkloric dancers and a fish market.

Then I was talking with our tour leader Luis, from Red Mangrove and he asked if I had seen the ceramic garden.

What ceramic garden?

The ceramic garden 10 feet from the door of the hotel.

Ohhhh, what?? Really?

As it turns out, it really was 10 feet from the door of the hotel! And there is a beautiful huge mosaic archway marking the entrance. To my credit, the archway is covered with a big green tarp, that makes it look as if it is under construction, and the plaque is the size of a piece of paper. I walked 10 feet outside the hotel door, camera in hand, and sure enough, there it was!

About The Mosaic Garden

The mosaic garden is a beautiful place. There are walls covered with huge larger-than-life mosaic depictions of the animals and scenery in the Galapagos – lava rocks, volcanos, marine lizards, and blue-footed boobies. There is a chair covered in mosaic art, and even what appears to be a castle, with small towers covered in mosaic.

The ceramic garden is a cool off-the-beaten-path place to check out, especially to take a break from your souvenir shopping in Puerto Ayora.

To get to the ceramic garden, look for Red Mangrove Aventura Lodge. Leaving the hotel walkway, turn left and walk 10 steps and it will be on your left hand side, look for the tiny plaque.
