Reader Question: What are the Galapagos Dive Conditions?

We always love to field Galapagos questions. This afternoon, a reader asked:

“Is there any shore diving available from any of the Galapagos Lodges? I have ‘heard’ most of the diving around the Galapagos is advanced. Is that true? Approximate water temp in Dec? in June? Looking to be enlightened! Thanks!” —JO

Great questions Jo. There isn’t really any good shore diving in Galapagos. You can do San Cristobal from the beach in front of the University and maybe Concha Perla Isabela (low depth) no more than 20 feet.

When you think about Galapagos you often think about liveaboard (where you live on board a ship between dives) – and yes, they go to dive sites for advanced divers. Keep in mind that Red Mangrove does PADI courses from Discovery Scuba Divers up to Dive Masters.

I got my certification for Open Water Diver in the Galapagos and now in 2 years I have over 70 dives. I would like to say that Gordon Rocks did require strong legs, but with the help of the Dive Master Rafael Gallardo was no problem to dive with Hammerhead sharks.

Galapagos Water Temperature: December should be between 18 to 24 degrees Celsius (64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit), June is cold and could drop as low as 13 degrees Celsius (55 degrees Fahrenheit).

Do not miss the opportunity to dive in one of the best dive places in the world. Swim with rays, sharks, sea lions and many other great species. Today we had 5 divers, 3 open water and 2 discovery scuba divers that went to Santa Fe. Check our www.divingingalapagos.com site for more information.
