Snorkeling with Sea Turtles on Black Beach (Video)

Black Beach on Floreana Island is the first black sand beach I’ve ever seen. It’s also the first place I’ve ever swam with sea turtles!

The sand was soft and black. The black sand made the water appear dark but once we were in we could see that it was only the bottom that was dark. The water was nice and clear, great for snorkeling.

Swimming With Sea Turtles, Fascinating!

Before we got in the water we saw sea turtles over by some rocks not far from shore, so we were excited to get into our snorkel gear and see if we could find them. Not long after we got in the water Bryan found one, a pretty male. We also saw a couple of large females.

I didn’t expect to be so drawn to the sea turtles. I was more excited about the possibility of swimming with sea lions, but the sea turtles fascinated me.

The way they just seem to hover near the bottom, swaying back and forth with the waves as they feed is beautiful. It reminded me of the way an eagle hovers looking for prey, riding wind currents yet staying in the same place.

Calm And Confident

The male didn’t seem to notice that we were there. He just went on peacefully eating the algae off of the rocks. When I dove down to get a little closer he didn’t even turn his head. Seeing how peaceful he was made an impression on me. What a beautiful animal!

Watching them swim was also a unique experience, it looked like they were flying. They have such a strong, calm confidence. Watching the sea turtles was different than any other sea life I had seen. Everything else I had ever seen snorkeling was fast/skittish, but the sea turtles were just the opposite.

Special Memories

Swimming with the sea turtles at Black Beach is one of the most special moments that Bryan and I shared while visiting the Galapagos. It felt like it was just the two of us and the sea turtles. The experience was beyond our expectations. It almost seemed too good to be true.

This is soooo beautiful. I have swum with the Galapagos turtles many times, and without fail, my heart races with the thrill of it. For these gorgeous creatures to so gently allow us to swim with them in their territory, and in such shallow waters too, is too marvellous for words!
