Exploring the Galapagos via Google Street View

google streetview galapagosFeeling nostalgic about my trip to the Galapagos, I took a walk through some of the prime spots using Google Street View today.

What? Yes, now you can virtually walk around the Galapagos!  Google’s “street view” in the Galapagos is actually a “trail view” as they sent a team of engineers out on the trails wearing spherical camera backpacks.

Playing with Galapagos Google Street view can’t compare at all to actually being there – eating fresh fish from the market, swimming with sea lions, and being at the top of a volcano, but it is a fun way to get an idea of what it is like.

In addition, some of the sites captured by google are from a different perspective. For example, the street view of Sierra Negra volcano is actually taken from ground level inside the crater (where scientists go, whereas tourists just hike around the rim of the crater.) There are 30 different sites which are shown in google street view. The entire list is shown in google here. My favorite three are below.

To check out google street view in the Galapagos, drag the yellow icon of the person onto the map, then drag around the view in 360 degrees.
