Galapagos Swimming at Las Grietas on Santa Cruz Island (Video)

Kids jumping from the rocks at Las Grietas, Santa Cruz Island

Las Grietas is one of the few places in the Galapagos that you are allowed to head out on your own (no naturalist guide) and go exploring.

The hike is beautiful and the swimming is amazing.

Getting to Las Grietas is pretty straight forward. Traveling from Puerto Ayora (the main town on Santa Cruz Island), a trip there and back should take about 2-3 hours, including time for a nice swim.

As shown in the video, you can:

  • swim
  • snorkel or even
  • jump from the cliffs

With a mask, we tried to see the bottom – and couldn’t, despite super clear water. But we did see some large fish. The water connects to the ocean underground and is slightly salty (brackish).

When we were there, the water was clear and cool – but caution is needed if you choose to jump into the water. We enjoyed watching the kids jump in – but we didn’t have the nerve to do it ourselves. If you were to slip it would be a long, hard hike (and boat ride) back to civilization.
