It’s Lobster Season in the Galapagos! (Video)

On August 10th the Galapagos National Park authorized the beginning of the lobster season for this year.  Normally the lobster season goes from September through December, but considering the sea cucumber season will not be allowed this year, they extended the lobster season a little bit more.


The lobster season takes place throughout these months in order to guarantee the proper reproduction of the lobsters and avoid fishermen catch them while they are breeding, reproducing or even worst with eggs. Regarding sizes, the permitted size is 26 cm from the head to the tail.


There are many techniques to catch lobsters, although not all of them are sustainable nor friendly with other marine species.  Due to this problem, Conservation International developed a project with local fishermen and top hotels and restaurants to encourage fishermen to use sustainable techniques.  I am including this below the video slideshow.

Conservation International organized a workshop with lobster fishermen, representatives of local organizations and other stakeholders in the island of Santa Cruz. The purpose of this workshop is to encourage the community to adopt techniques and rules of conduct to identify important aspects to contribute to strategies for the conservation of marine resources and provide environmentally friendly economical activities.

One of the main aspects considered to fulfill this task is including local hotels and resorts to exhibit and purchase the lobsters with the permitted size and the ones who are not with eggs. The goal expected by displaying the lobsters in the tanks is to provide local society and visitors information about these crustaceans life. Furthermore this initiative will prevent fishermen from trapping methods such as spears and harpoons which are the least suitable for the protection and conservation of thereof.

Pautas de Conservación Internacional: Temporada de Langosta en Los Galapagos

Para adoptar prácticas y comportamientos más amigables con el ambiente en la actividad pesquera, Conservación Internacional Ecuador (CI-Ecuador) organizo un taller con pescadores de langosta, representantes de organizaciones locales y otros actores claves en la Isla Santa Cruz, para identificar puntos importantes con el objetivo de contribuir con estrategias para la conservación de los recursos marinos.

Uno de los principales puntos para que se cumpla esta tarea fue la participación de varios establecimientos hoteleros y turísticos en la compra y exhibición del producto con el tamaño permitido y que no se encuentren ovadas. Es por ello que la demostración de las langostas en las peceras, brindan a la sociedad conocer más de cerca la vida de estos crustáceos, evitando así que los métodos de captura tales como las lanzas y arpones sean las menos adecuadas para la protección y conservación de las mismas.
