This all-inclusive adventure offers a wonderful way to explore the amazing Andes Mountains and Lakes.
Our trips are suitable for people with limited experience of kayaking so don’t worry – you don’t need to be able to do an Eskimo roll.
Our designated guide will pick you up from the Quito Airport or Hotel where you are staying and start your journey through the Andes imposing mountains with complete safety due to our excellent roads.
We will travel 90-minutes by car to the beautiful Hotel Casa Mojanda, surrounded by amazing mountains where you will feel a really quiet, relaxing and peaceful environment. This hotel is a typical Ecuadorian “hacienda” so you will have the opportunity to get involved with our country’s culture.
The hotel is located just outside the indigenous market town of Otavalo, one of the most important craft markets of Latin America. Here you can learn more about the Otavalo culture .
You will have traditional breakfast in the hotel which has its own organic farm. After breakfast, we’ll travel to Mojanda Lake which is located 25 minutes from the hotel.
Your kayak guide is an Otavalo native and knows about the lakes and the environment so you will enjoy his company and experience. This peaceful lake is surrounded by gorgeous and unique Andean landscapes.
This kayak activity will cover over 2000m and we want you to feel comfortable and safe with your guide.
After kayaking, we will prepare snacks for you. This is a great opportunity to learn more about your Otavalo guide. Indigenous people speak about mountains and lakes as a superior energy, so you may hear very interesting stories and legends about this mountains and lakes.
You will return to the hotel to relax and have lunch.
After lunch, you will travel 40 minutes by car to Cuicocha Lake one of the most amazing lakes our country has to offer.
Here we will hike 2 hours around the lake and its surrounding area. In this activity, you will have the opportunity to take photos, admire the landscape, talk to your guide and make yourself an Andean expert. You’ll also be able to do birding, and you may see a lot of native species from this environment.
Wildlife species historically present in the area include:
- white-tailed deer
- páramo foxes
- and over 100 species of birds.
A wide variety of flowering plants attract 20 species of hummingbirds, including the Giant Hummingbird, largest of the world’s 319 species. Additionally, the endangered Andean Condor, world’s largest raptor.
After this activity you go back to Casa Mojanda and you will have time to relax and prepare for the next day adventure.
You will have traditional breakfast in the hotel which has its own organic farm and after that you will travel to San Pablo Lake.
San Pablo Lake is 40 minutes from Casa Mojanda travelling by car. On the way to the lake, you’ll enjoy beautiful landscapes.
With your Otavalo guide, you will start kayaking in San Pablo Lake. This lake is very important to all people from Otavalo for two reasons:
- due to how close it is to the town
- how many historical events from people from the town has happened around the lake.
San Pablo lake is the biggest lake of Imbabura province.
Your kayak activity will be completely enjoyable and you will be very happy to be able to kayak in this important lake. The lake is surrounded by nature and you will see how indigenous people respect the nature and feel grateful about having the lake and live by tourism.
After the kayak, you will have lunch in the shore of San Pablo lake.
In the afternoon, you will go to a handcraft market in Otavalo to see the famous “ponchos” and all the handcrafts made by people from this market. This will be an amazing cultural encounter for you and you will enjoy and have fun looking all the handcrafts made here in the north of our country.
You will be able to buy your favorites and take them to your hometown.
In the evening, you will have a farewell dinner and you will return to Quito to the airport or your chosen hotel.
