What Is The Weather Like In The Galapagos Islands?

The weather in the Galapagos islands ranges from warm to hot. Because there is not much of a variation in the temperature you can visit the Galapagos all year round.

Two Weather Factors

Two factors contribute to the weather patterns in the Galapagos Islands: one is their location and the other is the two major ocean currents that swirl around them.

The Galapagos islands are located on the equator making them warm/hot all year round. The highest elevation is found on Volcan Wolf (Wolf Volcano) on Isabela island and is at 1,707m (5,600ft) above sea level. When exploring areas at higher elevation it’s good to remember to bring a light waterproof jacket.

The two ocean currents that help make a division between the cool/dry season (which is actually warm) and the hot/wet season are the Humboldt and the Panama currents.

How Water Currents Relate To Weather In The Galapagos Islands

The Humboldt Current brings cooler weather because it is a cool ocean current. The water and air do cool off a little, in comparison to the hot season. The water temperature ranges from about 65°F (18°C) to 75°F (23°C). This season runs from June through November and the sky is generally overcast. It can be a little windier during this time of year as well.

The Panama Current brings warmer water and with it warmer air temperatures  Although this is called the wet season, it does not rain continually. Normally the sky is generally clear, but can cloud over quickly and lead to heavy downpours. During this time of the year the water temperature ranges from around 70°F (21°C) to 80°F (27°C). This season runs from December to May.

The exception to these two weather patterns would be during an El Niño current. During an occurrence of El Niño the water and air temperature remain warm.

Diverse Weather In Ecuador

Ecuador is a very diverse country ranging from warm/hot areas like the Galapagos islands to cool/warm areas like the Andes Mountains. If you plan on exploring mainland Ecuador in your travels remember to bring some warmer clothing for areas of higher elevation like Cuenca and Quito.
